  40. The Digital "Freeware CD" contains a copy of C-Kermit that was put there
  41. without permission, in violation of our copyright notice, and therefore
  42. illegally.

  44. Kermit users need to realize that nobody pays us to be here working
  45. full-time for you, except you yourselves.  The way we like you to help pay
  46. for the Kermit Project is to purchase the appropriate user manuals, such as
  47. "Using C-Kermit".  This is relatively painless, and it's a good investment
  48. because it shows you how to get the most out of your software, how to cope
  49. with problems, and so on.

  51. When companies like Digital put our software on their "Freeware CDROMs",
  52. they rarely, if ever, take the pains that we do ourselves to get the message
  53. across about purchasing the manuals.  That is one of the reasons we like
  54. you to come to us for the software: so you will see the message.  Another
  55. reason is that we have the definitive and up-to-date Kermit software.  If
  56. you get it from another source, you don't know if it's complete and up to
  57. date, or if it has been modified in some way, or has viruses.  In any case,
  58. we can't support it.  Furthermore, when our software is distributed without
  59. our permission in this way:

  63.  . It increases our tech support burden.

  65. So please do obtain Kermit software in the proper manner, from Columbia
  66. University -- by Web, FTP, or mail order -- and please do purchase the
